On April 14, George (Doc) Edwards passed away in his Martinsburg, WV home with his wife of more than 42 years (Joyce Rowe Edwards), and his daughter Michelle Edwards Jarvis of Lexington, MA by his side.
Born in Newton, MA with many years spent in Topsfield, MA, Doc entered the Army in the post-Korean War years. Following his discharge, he had a long, diverse career ranging from auto mechanic to providing technical support for business machines, travel agent to real estate agent. He was a tinkerer, putterer, problem solver, mentor and teacher. As an adult he learned Spanish and became an instructor at the Bowden Senior Center near their home in East Point, GA, where they lived for 35 years.
With a strong community spirit, Doc was active in Optimists International and was a founding member of both the East Point Chamber of Commerce and Oak Knoll Neighborhood Association. He was a supporter of community theater, involved in numerous local productions both behind the scenes and in minor acting roles. He considered himself to be a lifelong learner and was active in Power Core and Toastmasters International. Doc and his wife Joyce hosted many foreign exchange students over the years, a considerable number of them from Japan and Germany. They availed themselves of those opportunities to learn Japanese and German but also learned other languages as they traveled the world. Over their 42+ years of marriage they visited all seven continents, learning at least a bit of the language everywhere they went, and exploring places most people only dream of.
